Feline Rescue
Two teenagers come to the rescue of a kitten run over by a car

IT was a typical afternoon right after school for Jeremy Mark and Nafisah Anafi from USJ4.
They were walking home when they saw from a distance what looked like a kitten being run over by a car along Persiaran Tujuan.
“We saw the couple from the car picking up the kitten and abandoning it at the field next to the road. We were thinking –is the cat alive?” Nafisah said.
Both Form Five schoolmates at SMK USJ4, Jeremy and Nafisah were relieved to see the kitten moving from afar.
Two other persons, cartoonist Reggie Lee and the editor of SJ Echo who had also seen the cat being put by the road side by the motorist, had got to the kitten just a few minutes earlier.
They found the dark grey kitten alive but parts of its right paw missing. Its bone was jutting out and the wound was bleeding.
Nafisah and Jeremy offered to try saving the cat. Nafisah used her scarf to wrap the kitten and the duo quickly headed home to go to a veterinary clinic.
SJ Echo met up with Nafisah and Jeremy several days later and found the kitten, now named “Field” by Jeremy alive, but only standing on three legs.
With a bandage around its missing paw and a bandage also on its injured left paw, Field was attempting to walk but in most of its attempts, it managed to glide along the floor only.
“When I told my classmates about the kitten, they almost cried over the phone. Field has been gliding around and appears to be trying to balance itself.”
“The veterinarian we brought the kitten to had asked us if we wanted to put it down. No! Who are we to decide its fate?,” Nafisah said, adding that it cost her almost RM500 in bills to save the little kitten.
According to Nafisah, her mother paid the bill and she now has to help more around the house to “repay” her mother for settling the medical bill.
Both Jeremy and Nafisah are obviously relieved that Field is alive and responding well to treatment but cannot help feeling angry at the driver who knocked the feline and subsequently left it to die.
“We change the dressing twice a day and Jeremy helps by buying cat food for Field,” Nafisah said.

Editors Note: Jeremy and Nafisah have together reinforced the fact that there are unsung heroes out here in our community who expect nothing out of saving the life of another living being. This incident has also proven another point – A cat really has 9 lives!
