Long Road Ahead for LRT Subang Jaya

Transport Minister wants all conditions fulfilled before project gets the nod to go ahead
The proposal from Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd (Prasarana) to extend the LRT line to Subang Jaya is on Transport Minister Dato Seri Ong Tee Keat’s table.
But the nod to proceed will not be given until the Minister himself is satisfied that all areas of concern, especially the views of residents along the proposed route are met.
Ong said upon approval of the plans, a public display of the extension will be held at the Subang Jaya Municipal Council, Petaling Jaya City Council, Shah Alam Municipal Council and the Department of Railways.
Subang Jaya residents will be given three months to voice their opinions during the public display period.
“I have had two presentations made to me by Prasarana. I have given my views and they also have to take into account the views of the people too,” he said after a briefing and dialogue session at the 3K Complex, initiated by the Kelana Jaya MCA branch.
Ong expressed his hope that the area of coverage for the LRT line would be expanded but stressed that the social impact of the project would also have to be taken seriously into consideration.
“The public briefing is the first of many more to come to seek the views of the people. I have been approached by several residents groups, student communities, including low and medium income groups and they have shared their views with me.”
“It was suggested that the LRT should also extend to Bandar Sunway. I would like Prasarana to look into this,” he said.
Ong said the noise, privacy and welfare of students and low and middle income groups would have to be looked at as well.
More than 300 Subang Jaya residents attended the two-hour briefing on the extension of the Kelana Jaya line by Prasarana group managing director Datuk Idrose Mohamed.
Expected to be completed by 2013, the 17km fully elevated route with 12 stations will begin at Prasarana's depot in Lembah Subang. It will run through KTM Subang Jaya, USJ Summit, Taipan and finally, Putra Heights.
Two stations will be integrated, namely the KTM Subang Jaya and Putra Heights, where a multi-storey park and ride facility (which can accommodate around 1,500 parking bays) will be built. The USJ Summit station will also be provided with a similar facility.
The Subang Jaya line will then connect to the Ampang LRT Line via Sri Petaling to Kinrara, IOI Puchong and to Putra Heights.
The LRT line will be built on road reserves, river reserves and TNB reserve land, avoiding any need to acquire privately owned land, according to Idrose.
“The design of the stations will be similar to those you see in Bangsar. More comfortable and disabled-friendly feeder buses will be introduced to ferry passengers to and from the LRT stations.”
“Noise barriers will be erected where the LRT line is close to residential areas,” he assured.
