Crime can be reduced with the help of cabbies
IN yet another wave of measures to fight crime, taxi drivers in Selangor have been asked to help the authorities and the community fight crime.
Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation Selangor chairman Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah appealed to cabbies to help combat and fight crime.
“Crime is threatening our well being, our loved ones and our family. Crime has become rampant and is threatening the whole Malaysian community.”
“If criminals are not caught, they become braver and braver,” he said after giving out RM30 petrol vouchers, Celcom RM20 prepaid top ups, and a certificate for RM10,000 insurance coverage for a year to 300 cabbies at the launch of the campaign Role of Taxi Drivers in Overcoming Crime event at Sunway Pyramid.
The event was also attended by Selangor police chief Deputy Com¬missioner Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar, who read a speech by Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar at the event.
Khalid said more activities especially awareness programmes on crime prevention will be organized by MCPF this year.
“This is the first time cabbies have been roped in to help. They are on the road 24 hours a day and they go everywhere.”
“Cabbies can become our ears and eyes. They can report to us fast and the police can then respond immediately,” he said.
Earlier, Cheah (on behalf of MCPF) received a mock cheque for RM158,151 from Sunway Group deputy chairman Datuk Razman Hashim.
The amount was raised from a charity dinner, The Australian Bee Gees Show, organised by the Sunway Group, MCPF-Selangor and Karyawan, in aid of the last two organisations.
