Local authority contemplates putting uniformed personnel on crime prevention patrols
CONCERNED with rising crime in the municipality, Subang Jaya Municipal Council president Dato’ Adnan Md Ikshan is contemplating deploying uniformed enforcement personnel on crime prevention duty.
This move, if taken, will mark the first time in the country when a municipality actually deploys its enforcement personnel on active crime prevention patrols.
“We are seriously considering deploying some of our enforcement personnel to join the police and community in fighting crime.”
“The officers when deployed will be in full uniform and will move around on motorcycles,” Adnan said to SJ Echo after presenting applets to officers in the enforcement unit who had just received their promotion.
Both Adnan and MPSJ deputy president Mohamad Yusoff Ghazali also received their honorary ranks earlier.
“Residents had recently made the suggestion to me to deploy enforcement officers on the ground for crime prevention. This is a good idea.”
“We can have some of our officers go on rounds every three to four hours,” he said, adding that this could also include having the officers join the community for night patrols.
On whether the officers would be able to arrest suspects if a crime was committed in their presence, Adnan said the officers could execute a citizen’s arrest.
MPSJ presently has 250 enforcement personnel. The officers work on two 12-hour shifts.
Adnan said the council was studying the need to beef up their manpower.
“More new commercial and residential areas are mushrooming in the municipality and this creates a need for us to beef up our capability to cope.”
“Our coverage area is huge,” he said, adding that enforcement activities were now being carried randomly to deter any possibility of information leaking out to the public beforehand.
He said operations were now not confined to certain hours of the day.
“Raids on illegal massage joints for example can happen anytime. We can carry out raids during noon, late afternoon or even at night.”
“Raids are also carried out based on information received from the public,” he said.
