BE our eyes and ears in your community.

That's the message Subang Jaya OCPD ACP Zainal Rashid Abu Bakar had for residents in Putra Heights when asked how the community could play a role in crime prevention.

"We need more information from the public to help us solve the cases we have."

"Together we can tackle crime," he said before he presented members of the community participating in the Community Policing Programme for the area with a cetificate and a shirt.

The certificate bears the name of the participant in the programme, officially "deputising" him or her to be the eyes and ears of the initiative which currently exists in all the police stations in Subang Jaya.

Zainal later also informed residents of the criminal activity trend in the district.

"Most of the snatch thieves we encounter in Subang Jaya are on motorcycles. They come in pairs."

"Luxury car thefts are still going on and as such, if you have a luxury car, be extra cautious," he said, adding that most victims were pounced on when alighting from their vehicle upon arriving home.

Zainal said the gang also rammed the back of the victim's car, forcing him to stop, thus making it easy for them to grab the vehicle before making their escape.

"If you suspect anything amiss in an accident with this modus operandi, don't stop. Drive straight to the nearest police station," he said.

Another growing concern is a group who called residents claiming that they had kidnapped the resident's child at school.

"They would demand a ransom. In a state of panic, the victim would make the payment without checking to see if the child is actually with the culprits," he said.

Zainal said the group were conmen looking to make a fast buck from this situation.
