MPSJ Chief irked by poor response from Residents Committee (JKP)
Only 16 out of 29 JKP representatives turn up for launch of Zero Dengue Campaign
Dengue has killed nine last year but efforts this year to stem the high number of fatalities from recurring this year appears to be taken lightly by many of the Residents Committee (JKP) in the municipality.
The launch of the Zero Campaign, which involved a briefing by the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) and subsequently the dissemination of Abate, t-shirts and awareness material to JKP members started off with only 12 Zone representatives showing up. Under MPSJ, there are 29 Zones.
Later during and after the launch, representatives from another four Zones showed up.
MPSJ president Dato' Adnan Md Ikshan who appeared a little irked with the turnout in the morning said he was disappointed with how lightly some perceived the threat of dengue to be.
“Our municipality is one of the hotspots for dengue in the country and yet some people do not view this problem seriously.”
“In one week, we have had 159 reported cases, a figure which could be higher than that of a State like Negeri Sembilan,” he lamented.
Adnan said the council planned to continue the Zero Campaign throughout the year.
Under the campaign, abate and leaflets on how to keep the breeding of aedes under check would be disseminated to the public via the respective JKPs. JKP members have been given orange coloured t-shirts with MPSJ and JKP logos on them to go around and share the abate and materials with residents.
“Banners will also be given to JKPs to put up around the neighbourhood to remind house owners.”
“The effort to keep dengue under check needs the cooperation of the public. Those who continue to disregard and found to be breeding aedes will be compounded,” he said.
Adnan said the dengue problem was serious, with almost five cases reported daily in the municipality and two positive cases daily.
Subang Jaya State Assemblyman Dato' Lee Hwa Beng, who was the only State Assemblyman present, said he was also disappointed with the poor response from JKP representatives.
“The role of community leaders and the public is important to stem this menace,” he said.
Representatives from the following Zones showed up for the Saturday morning launch – JKP Zone 2, 3, 6, 9, 10, 11, 13, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 25, 26, 28 and 29.
