Kelana Jaya MP to Meet Home Minister for Crime Stats

Gwo-Burne promises to table request in Parliament for crime statistics to be shared with public. With him are ADUN Subang Jaya Hannah Yeoh and the committee members of SJ Alert.
SUBANG JAYA: A well-informed community is one which can work together with the police to fight crime more effectively, according to Kelana Jaya Member of Parliament Loh Gwo-Burne.
Towards achieving that, the police especially, should liberalise the way they work with communities, including providing crucial information on crime statistics.
"We need the police to be more liberal with communities especially with community initiatives like SJ Alert."
"The police should tap SJ Alert to get more information out to the community in Subang Jaya," he said during a press conference on SJ Alert.
SJ Alert SMS (Short Message System), SJ Alert EMS (Electronic Mailing System) and SJ Alert Web Forum (Internet Discussion Forum), are free Community Services made available to all residents of Subang Jaya, UEP Subang Jaya (USJ), Putra Heights and Bandar Sunway in Selangor.
"I work closely with the police myself and I believe the police can decide if this community initiative is responsible enough to work with."
"I will raise it with the Home Minister and also in Parliament to reinstate the release of crime statistics to the community to better keep them informed," he said.
ADUN Subang Jaya Hannah Yeoh who hosted the press conference said SJ Alert had played a pivotal role in the community by keeping them informed of crime, community events and initiatives such as the recent Balik Kampung campaign.
SJ Alert, according to its main coordinator Robert Chan said, presently had 3,399 subscribed members and the number was growing.
It used to receive weekly crime statistics from the four police stations - Bandar Sunway, Subang Jaya, USJ and Putra Heights. This arrangement however was stopped a year ago by the police.
"With information, the public can be alert and look out for suspicious characters lurking in their neighbourhood."
"We are not the police," Robert said when asked if people could report crime directly to SJ Alert, adding that the public should contact the police to report a crime.
