Selamat Menyambut Hari Raya Aidilfitri
As I begin to write my column, my mind is flashing all the pointers worth mentioning in this month’s piece. I will begin with thanking all the mosques and suraus in DUN Subang Jaya which have been so hospitable to me during my courtesy visits in the month of Ramadan. In exchange for the great hospitality, I have prepared and given out specially packed dates (kurmas) for the congregations. As Hari Raya approaches, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all my Muslim residents “Selamat Menyambut Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Maaf Zahir Batin”!
A special welcome to the new Timbalan Yang Dipertua MPSJ Tuan Abdullah Bin Marjunid and the new Pengarah for Jabatan Perancangan Bandar MPSJ Encik Yunos bin Kashib. “Selamat datang ke Subang Jaya dan Selamat Bertugas!”
For those who will be travelling during the Hari Raya holidays, may I remind you to sign up for the Balik Kampung Rumah Selamat program? You may contact SJ Alert or simply visit the nearest police station in DUN Subang Jaya to sign up.
Last week, we were all shocked by the brutal killing of a kindergarten teacher on a pedestrian bridge in Bandar Sunway. This was a snatch theft attempt resulting in death. I visited the family of the victim in Taman Sri Muda together with the assemblymen from Seri Setia and Sri Muda and gave aid on behalf of the Selangor State Government. Our deepest condolences to the family. MPSJ councillors have visited pedestrian bridges in DUN Subang Jaya to see how security can be improved in such places. I personally feel that the issue is about snatch theft and I have called for the public to provide suggestions to the police on how to curb this. Below are some of the suggestions received in response to my Twitter message:
• police reform is d answer. 1) 14k-strong Pasukan Gerakan Am shd nt hide in jungle; 2) 7k-strong Special Branch should all fight crime
• Ensure pedestrian lane out of reach to snatch thief on bike...kerb must be 15 cm. above the level of the road...
• CCTV system reduces Opportunistic Crime which is what Snatch Theft is about.
• educate ppl on how to protect themselves, on punishment and rights for citizen arrest
• build more lanes specially for motorcycles.
• deal with the root problem - drugs. Years ago there was more news about drugs capture. Now a few and far between.
• Create awareness and alert among society of snatch thieves. Reward $ helps too as it may scared the snatch thieves from doing it.
• Public awareness. Need more campaign on this. As well as running women protection and awareness.
• Separate pedestrian walkways from the roads.
• Potong tangan pencuri. Ini akan mencegah masyarakat dr memilih mencuri sebagai karier.
• can give reward to police when a snatch thief is caught & prosecuted. Community foot the bill. do this 4 all cases + prevention.
• more patrols cos when the thieves know they can be caught cos cops r ard the corner, they’ll think twice.now is free for all.
• awareness of the residents is very important. Instil the awareness of snatch theft on residents. give talk, training, send leaflets.
• Nobody wants to b a thief or robber. They r forced by city rat race & difficult economic situation. Hope to create work for all.
• be serious to get the culprit and bring to justices asap will set a precedent. get rid of tidak apa attitude.
• suggest for capital punishment. Then only these scumbags will think twice. No other way.
• need to have frequent police rounding in every hour.
• how abt asking the officer to pick up the emergency phone call and take action immediately?
• is it possible to put a gps chip in the hp of the victim, the thief might use the cash but they wil take time to sell the hp so can track them down .. Duno whether posible or nt n cost efficient ??
• Cameras should be installed around hotspots area like in Taipan & SS15. Plain clothes police patrolling is good too.
• Less people living in poverty would start, aka get rid of foreigners and low income earners.
Last week, I received news that my aunt and an 11 year old boy in SS19 had passed away. In both cases, the deceased suffered from brain haemorrhage. In both cases, the deceased had complained about having headaches before passing out. To prevent sudden loss of life in any ‘could-have-been-avoided’ scenarios, I encourage all residents to go for frequent health checks. My aunt complained of headaches, refused to see a doctor and only took Panadol for relief. Do not be indifferent, health is priceless. Never brush aside any symptoms (no matter how small or trivial it may seem) and immediately seek doctor’s help.
As the state assemblyman of Subang Jaya, apart from actively serving the residents on local issues by attending meetings, site visits, regular consultation with residents and etc, I also go on my knees weekly for the well being of all my constituents, asking God to bless all residents of Subang Jaya with good health and keep us safe from all harm.
