WHERE’S YOUR HYDRANT?

by SJECHO
30 November 1999

SS15 folks find out where their hydrants are for emergencies

DO you know where the nearest hydrant is from your house? Is the hydrant working? How important is the hydrant when the fire breaks out?
Many have probably taken for granted the existence of hydrants in their neighbourhood.
Concerned with the condition of the hydrants in their neighbourhood, the SS15 Neighbourhood Watch folks got up early last Saturday morning to join hands with the SS17 firefighters to check on the location of the hydrants.
The firefighters were led by Fire and Rescue Services Department Station chief Deputy Superintendent Mohd
Alwi Mohd Dali.
Apart from checking for existing hydrants, the residents and firefighters also cleared the debris found in the valve compartment and helped to clear the surrounding area of the hydrants of any obstructions.
The 50-odd group was also given a demonstration of how the firefighters checked for water pressure from the valves, which is crucial for fighting fires.
The residents also took the opportunity to adopt the hydrants in their neighbourhood, a programme which merely involves ensuring the hydrants are not obstructed and properly maintained.
Have you checked the hydrant nearest to you?
For more information on this programme, call the SS17 Fire and Rescue Services Department at 03 5634 9444.
