BREEDING GROUND
by SJECHO4 February 2010

CONSTRUCTION sites and commercial buildings in SS15 are the latest "breeding grounds" of the deadly Aedes mosquito.
In what was probably an immediate reaction to our "Red Alert" headlines on the dengue outbreak, the Subang Jaya Municipal Council mobilised a team of 60 personnel headed by MPSJ health officer Dr Roslan Mohamed Hussin to the SS15 commercial area, starting with a construction site.
The inspection yielded 3 samples from the construction site located along SS15/4G. Two of the larvae samples collected were later confirmed to be of the Aedes while the other was of the Culex mosquito.
"A compound of RM500 for each sample confirmed to be of the Aedes larvae will be slapped on the developer of the project."
"If there was another sample confirmed to be Aedes, we would have had to issue a stop work order to make the developer clean up their worksite," Dr Roslan said, adding that the samples were taken from water puddles on the floor and water tank.
"We have recorded 8 cases of dengue itself this year in SS15. Seven of these tested positive for dengue."
"This year, we have found the Aedes breeding not only in houses but also in the commercial buildings," he told reporters.
By the end of the inspections of the commercial area, 10 breeding spots were found and this prompted the council to immediately fog the whole area.
Up to the end of January, 252 cases of dengue had been reported in Subang Jaya, with 151 testing positive.
