RINGGIT FOR RINGGIT PLEDGE FOR CHARITY DO

For every RM1 donated at the Charity Durian Fest on Aug 10 (Sunday) at Subang Parade, a generous individual has pledged to match it. A maximum of RM10,000 is waiting to be donated by this individual. Can you guess who it is? Find out more in SJECHO August issue coming out on August 6.

Six and a half year old leukemia patient Mohamad Nurazhar Mohamad Rusli gets his PS3.

Sunway Pyramid fulfills his wish through CWS.

PETALING JAYA, July 19 2008.....Little Mohamad Nurazhar Mohamad Rusli was already waiting at the top of the stairs to his apartment when his “wish” gift came a calling recently.

Eyes gleaming away, he had been told someone was coming and his intuition probably told him that his wish for a Play Station 3 would be fulfilled.

He was smiling from ear-to-ear when Sunway Pyramid Sdn Bhd assistant PR manager Darren Chear, his colleague Teoh See Wei and Children's Wish Society of Malaysia's executive director Allan Hubbert arrived at the doorstep to his home.

Beneath that smile and zest that a little boy his age would have there, is a long history of pain and suffering for Nurazhar.

Diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), in February 2006, Nurazhar was set for a bone marrow transplant in July this year. But fate has it, a check in May on his bone marrow showed a relapse of the disease.

His parents, Mohamad Rusli Ayob and Nurulain Naina Mohd, although aware of the prognosis, are not giving up on seeking treatment.

“We know the implications of his relapse but we still want to try all our best to find treatment for him”

“We would like to thank Sunway Pyramid and CWS for helping to fulfill our son's wish,” Mohamad Rusli said.

Nurazhar, who is the fifth child in a family of six, was glued to the TV screen once the PS3 was plugged in. He was lost to the world, smiling to himself and mesmerised by the games that came with the set.

Children's Wish Society of Malaysia president Tan Sri Dr Ramon Navaratnam.said the society was gearing itself up to create more awareness on the plight of children in the country caught in the dragnet of terminal illnesses.

“Ten thousand children nationwide are stricken with diseases which can snatch their lives away.”

“Our bit, although small, brings back a smile and hope to fight on,” he said.

Navaratnam called on Malaysians, especially those in the Klang Valley to join the society on August 10 at Subang Parade for a unique event – a Charity Durian Fest – to raise funds for the society to carry out its public mission.

CWS is a registered national charity organisation set up with the objective of granting wishes to children afflicted with terminal diseases. Our only wish? To see a smile on the child's face when they get their wish fulfilled.

CWS raises funds through donations and contributions from the corporate sector and individuals. For more information on CWS, email cwsmalaysia@gmail.com or call Allan Hubbert at 019-2103623.

Share your experience with the newcomers, MPSJ ex-councillors urged

Former Subang Jaya Municipal Council members under the BN Government and their successors should put aside their political differences and work together for the people.

Selangor State Local Government, Study and Research executive councillor Ronnie Liu said he hoped the former councilors would share their vast experience and knowledge with the newcomers.

"Working together is for the good of the people," he said during a dinner hosted by the council for former councilors and their successors, adding that the idea mooted by MPSJ president Dato Adnan Md Ikshan to have the joint dinner was good and should be emulated.

Liu said MPSJ was an effective council but there was room for improvement.

"We can make Subang Jaya a good township and eventually give it city status. We have the potential."

"We have a big middle income group with a fair size of upper middle class residents," he added.

Earlier Dato' Adnan said the dinner was organised to thank the former councilors and also welcome the newcomers.

"Subang Jaya comprises of residents who are well-educated, modern and vocal."

"Last year itself, we received 15,000 complains from the public. This number was the highest in Selangor," he said while assuring the new councilors that it meant residents were vocal and knew their rights.

Children's Wish Society of Malaysia (CWS) appeals to Malaysians to help bring cheer to terminally ill children

PETALING JAYA, July 8 2008.....Help us bring cheer to children who are stricken with terminal diseases across the country and help bring a smile back to their faces, urges Children's Wish Society of Malaysia president Tan Sri Dr Ramon Navaratnam.

Stepping forward to extend a smile and a helping hand to grant a wish for children who have been diagnosed with terminal diseases is no easy feat for many working untiringly behind the scenes of the newly set up society.

“We have set ourselves up to bring some cheer to the unfortunate children out there who have been afflicted with diseases which may take their lives away.”

“It is a challenging task to push ahead in times like this, to try and grant a wish the child may have, and hope to see a smile on their face when it is fulfilled,” said Navaratnam, adding that the society needed more Malaysians to support it to do more of what it had set itself up to do.

Navaratnam said there were many ways and means for the public to help. “They can sign up as members or when a deserving case comes to our attention, the public can donate in cash or in kind. What's most important to remember is this – we are racing against time to grant their wish.”

The latest recipient of CWS was three-year-old Muhammad Qayyum Fiqri Syamsudin who was fetted to a birthday party at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital yesterday (Tuesday July 7 2008).

Qayyum as his mother Elfitra Hamid and the nurses call him is a Down Syndrome and is currently suffering from Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

“He used to dance when he hears joget music. Now he can't because of his condition. Over the last one week, he has lost appetite and even throws up milk that I feed him,”

“He cries most of the time because of the pain he endures. I am glad this birthday party was organised for him. Hopefully, it will give him the spirit to fight on,” Elfitra said.

CWS Executive Director Allan Hubbert who was present at the birthday party said the party was organised at a moment's notice.

“Generous support came from Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd who engaged a clown for the event, a birthday cake was sponsored by Secret Recipe and even fruit juices were sponsored by an individual”

“We are thankful to them for coming forward to help us fulfill this wish. Malaysians are truly very generous people,” he said.

“On August 10, we will be organising a Charity Durian Festival at Subang Parade in Subang Jaya, Selangor to help raise much needed funds for the work we do.”

“It is our hope that people will come forward to support this event,” he said.

Committing to Green............(from right) Sime Darby Senior Vice President II/CEO Healthcare Group Elaine Cheong, Sime Darby Healthcare group medical advisor Datuk Dr Jacob Thomas, SJMC consultant surgeon Dr Abel Arumugam, Chairman of Medical Advisory Board and consultant surgeon Dr Mohd Hanis Ahmad and SJMC COO Wu Chin Huei at the tree planting ceremony.

HOW many people does it take to plant a 25 feet tall tree?

That question was answered as early as 8.30am today - five people with lots of hands around them.

Thirty trees were planted altogether at the Subang Jaya Medical Centre temporary carpark and also on the grounds of Subang Ria by the management and staff of the private medical centre.

Sime Darby Senior Vice President II/CEO Healthcare Group Elaine Cheong who was joined by almost 50 staff and their families, rolled up their sleeves and shovelled away.

According to her, 12 trees were planted around the temporary carpark while another 18 were planted at the adjoining Subang Ria Park.

"It's our commitment to green our environment around us and also to commemorate our 23 year presence in Subang Jaya."

"The trees (which are forest species) were brought in from a plantation in Tanjung Malim," she said.
